Carlos' interest in the bass clarinet began under the influence of his brother, the composer Miguel. After studying clarinet in Madrid, he moved to Amsterdam to specialize in bass clarinet with teacher Harry Sparnaay.
There he obtained Bachelor's and Master's degrees in bass clarinet and contemporary music.
Over the past 25 years, Carlos has worked with many important European ensembles, chamber groups and orchestras. He has also performed numerous pieces as a soloist, including, after a close collaboration with the maestro Pierre Boulez, the double piece Dialogue de l'ombre, in a version for bass clarinet.
He also participated in one of the last recordings supervised by Györgi Ligeti, for the Teldec label and with the ASKO/Schoenberg Ensemble in Amsterdam. In 2004, and invited by the Nieuwe Ensemble, he premiered Brian Ferneyhough's controversial opera Shadowtime in Munich, Paris, Bochum, New York, London... etc.
He lived in Amsterdam between 1995 and 2018. Since then he has lived in Hernani.
